Karaikal Port
Karaikal Port is an all-weather deep water port developed in an area of 611 acres and commissioned in April 2009. Karaikal Port is located near the town of Karaikal in the union territory of Puducherry, India.
Since commencement of operations, the port has handled diverse cargo such as Coal, Iron-Ore, Limestone, Clinker, Sugar, Sand, Cement, Fertilizers, Project Cargo, Agro Commodities, Liquid Cargo and Containers.
Karaikal Port caters to the northern hinterland of Tamil Nadu with multimodal connectivity. It is the only port located centrally between Chennai and Tuticorin at a distance of 300 KM on either side. The port is capable of handling Dry Bulk, General Cargo (Break Bulk) and Liquid Cargo with overall cargo handling capacity of 21.5 MTPA.

Karaikal Port is a congestion-free port equipped with adequate infrastructure including mechanized coal handling system, cranes, conveyors, warehouse facilities, heavy earth moving equipment and railway infrastructures. Most of support services such as modern marine equipment, advance logistics solutions and IT infrastructure has elevated the port as the efficient port, unleashing the economic potential of central Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
- Two breakwaters one on the north side and another on the south side.
- Developed 05 Berths which are operational.
- Maximum Permissible Draft – 13.5 m to handle large bulk carriers.
- Two Liebherr make tyre mounted mobile harbour cranes.
- Dedicated mechanized coal handling system of two ship unloader with the capacity of 2000 TPH each.
- 5.7km length “Belt conveyor system” with the capacity of 4000 TPH.
- Two Stacker cum Reclaimer with the capacity of stacking 4,000 TPH & Reclaiming 2,500 TPH.
- 3 Bays of Truck Loading Station with the capacity of silo: 200 MT each
- In-motion wagon loading system with the capacity of silo: 800 MT
- 6,50,000 sq.m open storage plot developed for coal and general cargo.
- 19000 m3 liquid storage capacity with four units of mild steel storage tanks.
- 60,000 sq.m covered warehousing area for fertilizers, food grains, wood pulp, calcite cargo, clinker.

Karaikal Port is an all-weather port with no loss of operational days and hence, makes it a port of choice for trade. Karaikal Port has superior marine support infrastructure and assets which includes a fleet of Tugs, Pilot launch and survey boat. These ensure uninterrupted and smooth operations 24x7 in all environments at the port.

Road Connectivity
Karaikal Port is well connected by an extensive network of inter-connected National and State Highways. KPPL is connected by major roads to NH-67 at Nagapattinam linking Karaikal Port to central Tamil Nadu at Trichy. NH67 starting from Nagapattinam traverses Central Tamil Nadu in a near straight line connecting the major industrial areas such as Tiruchirappalli, Karur and Coimbatore as well as onward linkages to other industrial areas such as Salem, Erode and Mettur.
NH-45 which passes through Trichy connects Karaikal to northern hinterland right up till Chennai. Karaikal is also connected all the way to Chennai through NH-45A which passes through Cuddalore.
Rail Connectivity
KPPL lies on the Southern Railway network. The nearest rail head is at Nagore, approx. 3 km to the south. The rail link between Karaikal and Nagore extends to the port and connects to Nagapattinam on the south. The rail link connects Karaikal Port to the major manufacturing hubs of cement, steel, chemical, aluminium, textile etc. in Ariyalur, Trichy and Salem districts and upcoming industrial nodes around Mayiladuthurai, thus enabling heavy freight movement on the route. On the Northern side the nearest station is Karaikal and from Karaikal the northern connectivity to the other hinterland area is under construction by Indian Railways.
